Moving a financial services company from on-premise servers to managed cloud

Client name withheld under a non-disclosure agreement.

The challenge

The company ran its customer-facing and internal systems on servers in a rented data centre. Much of the hardware was close to the end of vendor support. Setting up a new test environment took weeks of requests and manual configuration, which held back every release.

Access rights lived in spreadsheets maintained by hand. When auditors asked who could reach which system, the IT team spent days assembling the evidence.

What we delivered

  • Cloud Infrastructure & Services. A new cloud foundation with separate production, staging and test environments, all defined as code. We moved workloads across in planned waves, starting with the least critical systems.
  • Cloud Operations Management. Round-the-clock monitoring and alerting, scheduled patching, backups with tested restores, and monthly capacity and cost reviews with the client’s IT lead.
  • Cloud & Systems Security. Single sign-on with multi-factor authentication, role-based access, centralised logging and encryption for data at rest and in transit. Access reviews now run from the identity provider rather than from spreadsheets.

Timeline

  • Months 1 and 2: assessment, migration plan and cloud foundation
  • Months 3 to 6: migration in four waves, each with its own rollback plan
  • Month 7: final cut-over, then handover to our managed operations service, which continues today

Outcomes

  • 60 to 70% less time to provision a new environment
  • Every cut-over finished inside its planned maintenance window
  • Audit evidence for access and change management is available on request instead of assembled by hand
